Digital Marketing Is About More Than Doing, It’s About Teaching
Giving someone tools to use is one thing. Showing them how to use those tools is quite another.
We didn't get to where we are as a species by dropping some sticks on someone's lap and saying, "good luck." We showed each other that rubbing two sticks together created sparks for fire. That's how we learned and survived. We still do.
And of course, today, we have a lot of digital tools, such as #TikTok, #LinkedIn, #Instagram, #Substack, #Podcasts, blogs, other social media channels, #YouTube, #ChatGPT, #Google, etc.
However, using these channels is only worthwhile if you know how to get views or build an audience. You can't just "create content" and then poof -- views, engagement, etc. You need a strategy, you need patience, the know-how to build an audience, and the ability to target an audience with ads.
And that's what digital marketing is, to me. It's the process of teaching people how to do something. I think that concept gets a little lost in the process. It's not just doing something for someone; it's showing someone how to do something. Show them how to build the fire.
Otherwise, it will never make sense to them. They will never understand why you did something and not the other or why what you did worked so well, and why they should keep you around. Some people don't want to learn and just want it done, which is fine. However, there is a difference, and you can build much more meaningful relationships if you can teach along the way.
